Thinking About Playing The Guitar

The guitar, be it electric or acoustic, is the most versatile of instruments. You can strum a few chords, adopt a highly disciplined classical guitar technique, or play sophisticated jazz chord and scale progressions. The choice is yours. Whatever your bag, the journey to achieving your goal and the fundamental sound is the real buzz.

Becoming a professional guitar player is a lot easier than becoming a professional tennis player. When learning the guitar, it takes time and practice, but in a short time you can become a professional player. When it comes to tennis you need to practice for the rest of your life to remain a good player.

When playing music on the guitar you will find that it shares many of the same characteristics as speaking. A couple of words can mean a lot more than a speech. The same goes for playing the guitar. Playing a few chords is sometimes better than playing hundreds of notes.

In my personal opinion, Bob Dylan was one of the most successful musicians ever. While his success was was derived from playing the guitar, without his skill as a lyricist, he would never have made it as a big hit. His guitar playing was no better than anyone else’s but combine that with his skill at song writing and you now have a super star.

The one thing you need to realize is that the technical ability to play the guitar doesn’t really have much to do with musical talent. If you are into country music or blues you could end up being an exceptional player of this type of music. On the other hand if you prefer country, playing jazz may be too hard.

The person who chooses to play music with there heart and soul becomes a musician. If you see classical guitarist’s, the kind that went to college to become a great player and plays in orchestra’s, are usually the worst type of player when it comes to playing rock or country music. Even though they are great at what they do.

One thing you should never do is to follow what other guitar players are doing. That is a sure path to failure. Get the right attitude, and combine that with your heart and do your own thing. One style of guitar playing that is perfect for one person can be completely wrong for another person.

When you tune in to the simplicity of a player such as the great blues guitarist B. B. King, you can’t help but be affected by his economy of notes, played in such a meaningful, soulful musical context.

Playing guitar has an infinite number of possibilities. It is the most adaptable, usable instrument, and it’s the journey to your goal that’s the fun part. You will never stop learning guitar. Each time you pick it up you will discover something new and it needn’t be hard to play to be relevant!
