Metallica is known as the band that made a name for metal and made it what it is today. Anthrax, also, played a role in this, but Metallica is remembered more, today, for this feat. Some; however, would completely disagree with this accomplishment, but neither here nor there, Metallica is, and always will be, metal.
Another well known metal band, from the same era, is Megadeth. Megadeth’s lead singer and guitarist — Dave Mustaine — is said to have had a voice when it came to metal as well. There are some who believe this and stand by it. However, what many are not aware of is the fact that Mustaine perfected his talent with Metallica. He was one of the original Metallica band members, well until him and Lars had a tiff and Mustaine was removed from the band permanently. It wasn’t until this that he moved on with Megadeth.
Metallica has made record sales when it comes to their albums and earnings. While touring is good for money, it is not so good for the band. Metallica is a band that has fun on the road, like all other bands, but doesn’t quite call it quits when they should. Their excessive drinking, on the road, has caused some serious problems for the band, making touring a bit of a second option. In the late 80s, the band lost a beloved band member — Cliff Burton. Rather than this opening their eyes, it caused them to only drink and participate in drugs more frequently. By the time the 90s rolled around, the band couldn’t keep a bassist no matter how hard they tried, and band members were at each other’s throats.
Metallica has no intentions of stopping after 9 Grammy’s, 2 MTV Video Music Awards, 3 Billboard Music Awards, 2 American Music Awards, along with the Kerrang Hall of Fame Award. The Grammy’s, while remarkable on their own, have all been in less than a 20-year period — an amazing feat. Metal, in the 80s, while good was not looked upon as suitable for kids. Kids; however, did everything they could to get their hands on Metallica’s music as they were the greatest band of that time. Songs like Garage Days Re-Revisited, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets were all kids would tap out on a desk or on the guitar.
Putting all of the negativity to the side, Metallica has done well for them. Metallica has a passion for what they do and it comes out every time they perform — live or recorded. If you have not seen them perform live, you truly are missing out. The amount of energy this band exudes is astonishing.
