Jeff Dunham – The Greatest Ventriloquist of Our Time

Jeff Dunham is one of the greatest comedians of our time. He is an only child who struggled a bit, in school, with boredom. He is also a college graduate. There are many ideas as to why Jeff may have struggled; they range from being an only child to having attention difficulties. Regardless, he got through school just fine and has made quite the life for himself and his family. (In fact, the guess — now — would be it was his cleverness that kept him antsy as a child.)

Neither here nor there, it was the qualities that got him in trouble as a child that has helped him to reach great success. Dunham was born with a gift that he has had the luxury of perfecting over time. This gift is his ability to make people laugh, his creativity, along with his astonishing charm. (Dunham is one of few people who get away with saying the things he says.) His charisma, along with his approach, allows him to say things that are laughed off rather than taken offensively.

Dunham’s audiences are constantly going home and repeating jokes they heard at his show or on TV. While they may not pull it off quite like he does, they jokes are still funny. But one of the most fascinating things about this is the fact that people can say things, they normally couldn’t get away with, and people laugh because they know the source — Jeff Dunham. Dunham was not satisfied with the simple comedic part of his personality, or the standard ventriloquism you see. Instead, he creates characters, customized to each show, which he brings with him to bring his jokes to life — to make them real.

Most people have heard of Jeff Dunham, if not seen him perform. Jeff began his career performing at fairs, and even on Broadway. One of his appearances, on Broadway, was with Mickey Rooney, which definitely helped in making a name for Dunham. It was during this time in his life that Jeff was able to hone in on his skills, and perfect them, along with creating his suitcase friends.

Johnny Carson, whom was very particular about who he allowed to sit on the couch next to his desk, had heard Jeff Dunham and was impressed enough to invite him onto the show. It was in 1990 that Dunham made his appearance on The Tonight Show and his entire world changed. Nothing would be the same for Jeff Dunham when he awoke the next morning.

His next step was to tour North America. Jeff made several stops before Comedy Central approached him about his own gig on their station, an offer that Dunham willingly accepted. The combination of this gig, his tour, and Johnny Carson make Dunham the next big thing.

Shortly thereafter, Dunham hosted three Comedy Central specials. It was during these specials that his suitcase characters, such as Jose the Jalapeno on a Stick, Walter, Achmed the Dead Terrorist, Peanut, Sweet Daddy, Melvin the Superhero guy, the invisible tequila worm inside the bottle, and Bubba J began to be recognized and admired. Every show begins with audience anticipation as they wait anxiously for Jeff to open his suitcase and introduce his friend of the evening.

Jeff Dunham toured in North America after a great success in Europe. His first stop was Allegan Michigan in September of 2009. After this you he traveled to Iowa, New York, Arizona, Virginia, Illinois, Washington, California, and even Oregon. His final appearance, on this particular tour, was Anaheim in November of 2009.
