Metal guitar legend Dimebag Darrell partnered with Dean guitars before his unfortunate death to design the ultimate metal and shred guitar. This guitar, known as the Razorback, is as deadly sounding as it is deadly looking. The jagged design makes it clear that this is no 1950’s guitar!
Dean makes several Razorback instruments to appeal to a wide variety of different budgets. The features and construction of the instruments dictate the cost. Our current review model, the Razorback DB, is perhaps a more budget-oriented instrument, but don’t mistake inexpensive with cheap.
We looked at the Classic Black model, but it’s also available in Metallic White. It features a mahogany body and neck with a rosewood fretboard with Pearl razor inlay at the 12th fret. Dean-designed humbuckers, Grover tuners, and a tune-o-matic style bridge finish out the feature set.
With respect to the guitar’s playability, the Razorback DB has low action without much buzzing at all, once we tweaked the bridge and neck slightly. The guitar lends itself to super-fast fretwork. Dimebag would be very happy!
We were very content pleased with the sounds we heard from the Dean-designed humbuckers. The tones were what we hoped for with such a metal shred machine. The lows were thunderous and the highs were cutting, just what we wanted. You won’t be getting an incredibly versatile guitar, that’s for sure.
However, this isn’t really a bad thing. After all, you’re not going to show up for a jazz gig playing the Razorback DB, not unless you want to get fired!
If we have any complaints, it’s that the included case doesn’t look like it would stand up to heavy usage. The guitar is also pretty dang big, so it’s not a guitar you’re going to play around the house casually.
Overall, for the price this is one major shred guitar and one we really recommend for future metal gods on a budget.
