Consider Virtual Surround Sound Systems For Smaller Rooms

These days, home theaters are making an appearance into more and more homes. What most people love about home theaters is the fact that in one area they can enjoy their movies and television shows as well as jam to their tunes on their stereo. Most people who are seeking to buy home theater components look to purchase the biggest speakers they can find in order to reproduce the enveloping wall of sound that accompanies it. However, with the larger size comes the larger price and that tends to be the first limiting factor in the quest to purchase home theater components. However, virtual surround sound systems are here to the rescue!

For standard home theater systems, 5 speakers are setup which then surround the audience. However, with a small room, you may not have the space to properly setup the speakers and still not harm your guest’s ear drums. For this reason alone, you will need to search for smaller speakers or an alternative to the standard surround sound speakers.

You are in luck if you have a small space that you wish to use. Many speakers today have taken advantageof miniaturization and wireless technologies in order to produce small, wireless speakers.

Another technological advance is one of virtual surround sound. This technology simulates the sound characteristics of true surround sound systems. Virtual surround sound systems basically come in two flavors that are not too different from each other. These two are the 2.1 surround system and the digital sound projection system.

Typical surround sound systems accomplish their objective by literally surrounding the audience with speakers. Five speakers are arranged in a circle around the audience starting with a center speaker that is placed directly in front of the audience. When looking to buy surround sound speakers, the traditional speakers of this variety are labeled as 5.1 or 7.1. With virtual surround sound systems, the goal is obtained but without actually surroundign your guests. The 2.1 variety uses two speakers in front of the audience along with a subwoofer placed anywhere in the room. The digital sound projector system uses a bunch of small speakers placed in a line in front of your guests.

The virtual surround system is designed to take advantage of our knowledge of how humans process auditory stimuli. When the human ear is processing the sound waves internally, these new systems fool the auditory process into thinking that more speakers are in use than actually are.

With the invention of virtual surround sound, those people living in small apartments in major cities can also enjoy the same type of entertainment as those who live in single family homes in the suburbs.
