Cha Cha is an offshoot of the Mambo. Originally called the Cha-Cha-Cha it became favored in about 1954. Eventually it developed into another dance, known today as the Cha Cha -a mambo ( fusion of jazz and Latin rhythm slowed down three times. ) .It is an active and sensual dance.

Origin of Cha-Cha
From the less inhibited night clubs and dance halls the Mambo underwent subtle changes. It was triple mambo, and then strange scraping and shuffling sounds in the “tripling” produced the imitative sound of Cha Cha Cha. This then turned into a dance in itself. Mambo or triple Mambo or Cha Cha as it is now called, is but a complicated stage in interpretive social dancing born of the fusion of progressive American and Latin music.
This dance was developed to the new mambo rhythm. For this reason, the dance was favored by dancers thoroughly acquainted with complex Afro-Cuban music. However , many figures of the mambo was called the chatch, which involved 3 fast changes of weight preceded by 2 slow steps. By the early 1950s the dance bought the name CHA-CHA ; its characteristic three-step change of weight carried the identifying oral definition, “cha-cha-cha”.
This dance differentiates itself from all the other Latin dances : that is to sing in balance with no vibrato. In 1949, this new sex of dance craze was introduced in the United Stated by Minon Mondajar. Cha Cha Cha, brass, strings or reeds are used melodically and in rhythms against a solid Latin rhythm part with voices in unison prevailing throughout .
