Not only has Green Day managed to stay together as a band and continue to pump out their catchy flavor of punk rock, but they’ve achieved a level of cult status rarely seen for punk bands. From their roots as a local California band with a small following, they’ve become a mega band playing the globe and probably the most influential punk band in existence over the past two decades.
Original formed under the name Sweet Children in 1987, the played local shows in California, immersing themselves in the punk scene before signing with Lookout! Records. Their first EP, titles “1,000 Hours” was released by Lookout!. They also decided to start appearing under the new name, Green Day to create separation between themselves and another band with a similar name to Sweet Children. Now, Green Day has released eight studio albums and sold over twenty-two million records, just in the United States.
The band members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool have managed to stick together and find wild success, a rarity in the music business. Not only has the band stayed true to their roots and original music, but they’ve become iconic in the punk world and young musicians consider them an inspiration.
Now the band is working their first worldwide tour in three years. The tour starts with a concert in Seattle before heading all over the United states and the world, promoting their latest album. The release, titled “21st Century Breakdown” boasts five hit singles and over twelve million copies sold.
Despite their roots in an alternative genre, Green Day has taken their catchy brand of punk to the masses, and along the way, achieved iconic status. Now Green Day is one of the established bands of the last two decades, a far cry from being a small band trying to make it in California.
